Professor Keown graduated in law from the University of Cambridge and received his DPhil from the University of Oxford. In 2015 Oxford conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, a prestigious 'higher doctorate' which has been described as 'the ultimate degree in the common law world'. His research, particularly on law and ethics at the beginning and end of life, has been cited by leading bodies worldwide, including the US Supreme Court and the Law Lords. He is the author, co-author or editor of six books, and is currently completing two more.
