John Morrell is associate professor of painting & drawing at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

The Hall was happy to host Prof. Morrell for a sabbatical semester as he worked on on-site studies of the beautiful Oxford environs. A native of Albany, New York, he has painted and taught in the Washington, D.C. area for over thirty years; his work has been staged in many exhibitions at home and abroad; and he has received numerous awards and regular commissions for private and corporate collections. Prof. Morrell is also former Chair of Georgetown's Department of Art and Art History.

He writes, ‘My work brings together a strong landscape tradition in American painting with the contemporary concerns and issues of urban development, preservation of the natural environment and perceptions of our surroundings. The distinction of on site work is the meditative and observational process of time. To be still in one place, observing for several hours, noticing different aspects of a place over time shapes my vision; investing it with personal information that a recording on film or disk cannot communicate."
