The Jesuits in Britain: Celebrating 400 Years

On 21 January 2023, the British Jesuits celebrated the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the English, now British, Province of the Society of Jesus.

A conference will take place at Campion Hall, Oxford to explore the contribution of British Jesuits to the Church and society at home and abroad, since the Jesuit mission in Britain in the 16th century and the province’s formal beginning in 1623 to the present day. Guest speakers will address themes such as the British Jesuits and music and the arts, their relationship with religious and lay women, their intellectual activities and their libraries, parishes, and schools, and their work overseas. The conference will include an exhibition of printed materials and artefacts from the Campion Hall library and the archives of the British Province.

As part of the conference, there will be a public lecture by Professor Gerard Kilroy in the Weston Library, followed by a Service of Thanksgiving in Christ Church Cathedral, in which everyone is welcome to attend.
