A Synodal Church is a Listening Church - Talk by Cardinal Mario Grech

Cardinal Mario Grech will be in Oxford to give the keynote address opening the three-day symposium, "The Road to a Synodal Church: Insights and Experiences", hosted by Campion Hall. We warmly welcome you to tune in for the livestream of Cardinal Grech's address on "A Synodal Church is a Listening Church".

About Cardinal Mario Grech

Cardinal GrechCardinal Mario Grech is Secretary-General of the Synod of Bishops, whose office is in the Vatican but is not technically part of the Roman Curia. He was Pro-Secretary General from October 2019 until Pope Francis appointed him Secretary General in September 2020, and a cardinal two months later.

Cardinal Grech, who is Maltese, is tasked with guiding the Church’s synodal conversion, as envisioned by Pope Francis in his October 2015 speech and spelled out in the apostolic constitution Episcopalis Communio in October 2018. As the Handbook to the synod on synodality puts it, “the synodal process is no longer only an assembly of bishops, but a journey for all faithful, in which every local church has an integral part to play.”

Before his role at the synod, he was the bishop of Gozo in Malta from 2005 and president of the Maltese bishops’ conference. He has a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas in Rome, known as the ‘Angelicum’.
