Campion Hall Senior Fellow Contributes to Document on Taxation
Dr Patrick Riordan SJ, Senior Fellow in Political Philosophy and Catholic Social Thought, was one of a number of experts invited to contribute to a new publication on taxation from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England Wales. Render Onto Caesar looks at the economy and taxation and provides a related set of reflections derived from Catholic Social Teaching.
The document considers the moral dimension to taxation taking account of issues such as family life, intergenerational justice, and the application of the living wage or just wages.
At its launch, Bishop Richard Moth, who chairs the Bishops’ Conference’s Department for Social Justice said that it was important that public policy in all areas of social life is informed by moral principles.
Dr Riordan’s chapter, which is available here, considers the place of taxation in the post-pandemic economy, confronting the politics of fear, reflecting on the nature of debt in the economy, and offering thoughts on an alternative economic pathway within which policy on taxation might be situated.
