Two New Books from Professor Jane Stevenson

book coverProfessor Jane Stevenson, Senior Research Fellow in English, Book History, and Women’s Studies, has published two brand new books: Siena: The Life and Afterlife of a Medieval City (Apollo 2022), and Women and Latin in the Early Modern Period (Brill 2022).

Siena is described as “an authoritative, richly illustrated history and affectionate celebration of Siena, one of the best-loved and most-visited cities in Italy,” and tells the story of how the city rose to its productive cultural heyday in the 13th and 14th centuries before suffering a catastrophic decline in the aftermath of the Black Death.

Professor Stevenson describes how, despite this early loss of power, the city was able to enjoy a prosperous civic afterlife and cherished position as a uniquely well-preserved medieval city, full of world-class art and architecture.

In this video, Professor Stevenson talks about two Sienese paintings found at Campion Hall and how they came to be here.
